You have to know details about your closet before you get to the lumberyard. You can't tell a clerk that you want plasterboard, also called sheetrock, without getting a question as to how much you want. Making a guess and telling him that you want 100 pieces is something you will later regret. On the checklist, you need to write down not only the things you'll need, but also how much of each. For a simple project such as a closet, you can probably get by on one box of nails, but might need two or three kinds. Making sure there are no unused materials around the house or garage is a good way to prevent yourself from getting something you don't need. Other things to consider are screws, plasterboard, two by fours, a doorknob set, hinges, door, and masking tape and paint.
We won't try to tell you every step of the installation here, but we will make sure that you know the basics. A closet is fashioned around a floor space, and it should complement the rest of the room. Often, making at least two closet walls will be necessary, formed of two by fours rising from the floor to the ceiling in order to box the closet in. Build these additional walls, making sure that any baseboard and ceiling trim have been removed from the adjacent walls. The walls need to be installed square to the floor using a level so that a door can be properly hung, later. The two by fours will need to be covered with sheetrock, probably on both sides, by attaching with sheetrock screws using a drill and Phillips head driver. The door is installed next, making sure it opens and closes properly, followed by the doorknob and door trim. After that, the baseboard and ceiling trim go in. Painting is the last step. Before starting the job of making a closet, you decided whether or not you wanted shelves and/or a clothes hanger rod. This is the final part of the job and will determine the functionality of your new closet. If you decide to proceed with building a closet, good luck on your project and don't forget to follow a plan! |
